Portfolio Turn-In Reminders
Hi Everyone. I just wanted to remind you that you'll be turning your portfolios in between 9am and 12noon on Monday, December 15 in my office, Heavilon 417 (and yes, there is an elevator--go to the center of the building). Remember that under no circumstances will I accept a portfolio after 12:00 noon.

Visual Rhetoric Reading

Here is the Web reading we're looking at and discussing this week. I think you'll enjoy it: Rhetorical Handbook: An Illustrated Manual For Graphic Designers. It's in PDF; at over 3MB, you'll probably want to download it on campus. And for those of you who've been craving something on paper, it's printable (but you're all too digital for paper now anyway, right? RIGHT?)

It's October--FREAKIN' OCTOBER!

OK, I'm over it.

Here is the Internet Site Report assigned in class today. It's due electronically on Monday, 10/06. While you can work together on this assignment, if you choose, there must be one site per report, per person. Meaning that, even if you work with two other people, you will submit three reports on three different sites.

Oops...some things that got deleted.
Our class hero, Nathan, alerted me to the fact that the conference preparation and evalution document links that were on this new page had disappeared. Anyway, I have now created a page that has all documents, readings, etc. in one place, and you can find it through the Special page, or just click here. Kudos to everyone who remembered to bring the document to conferences today!

Updates, New Things, an Assignment, Videotaping

1. The syllabus has been updated. Check it out here.

2. The conference schedule for the next two weeks is up. Check it out here.

3. The Research Resources assignment, as linked from the eBook, is up. So is the Research Resource itself.

4. The Library Report Assignment, to be explained in class Monday, 9/29, is here. It's due electronically before the beginning of class on Thursday.

5. I will be videotaping our some of our classes and conferences in the coming weeks for use in my teaching portfolio. I'll be sure to have class situated so that if you do not wish to appear on the video, you won't. I'll also be asking your permission to videotape conferences.

That's all! See you in class.

Focusing Strategy + Lupton & Miller Reading...

Mike Arvola, our class's "eye in the sky," has pointed out a couple of useful things on the Blog as of late: 1) that there are "Customizing the xyz Strategy" at the end of several of the strategies, which you (and hopefully Mike himself) will find useful, and that 2) the Lupton & Miller reading for today is nowhere to be found in the eBook (just like the Focusing Strategy itself. So here you go, Mike and Everyone:

  • The Focusing Strategy (RTF)
  • The Period Styles Piece (PDF) [due to copyright issues, I've removed this file].

Happy reading. See you guys the other side of the weekend.

Computer Day #1
We'll spend the first few minutes of class today installing the TK3 reader from the eBook CD-ROM, and then spend some time exploring the eBook. During that time, I'll be double-checking your @purdue.edu email addresses, and propogating them to our Blog. We'll finish up by trying to post to the Blog, and I'll show you how that works in conjunction with our eBook.

Welcome!

If you're reading this page, you've completed your first technology challenge of the class: getting on to the Course Website. The other part of your assignment, as we talked about in class, was to download a copy of our course POLICIES in PDF format, and a copy of the Syllabus in PDF format. You may want to print off a copy of the Policy Statement, but you only need to print off a copy of the contract to sign and return to me at your next meeting with me (either Tuesday or Wednesday).

In order to view PDF files, you need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can download here. (If you're on an ITaP [computer lab] computer, Acrobat will already be installed.) You'll also need the Acrobat reader for viewing some of the materials on the eBook, and for reading other articles/materials that I (or perhaps you) will place online.

Welcome to the course! Go find those POLICIES and SYLLABUS (see? I'm giving you hints as to where they are), and bring your printed contract for next time we meet. Also, if you get the eBook running, please email me your thoughts about it. 10 extra credit points to the first person with a reaction email that indicates you've indeed looked at the eBook for more than five seconds :-)
